Interview with David Levine, President of NuGo
LCG Foods sat down with NuGo's President, David Levine, and asked him some questions to better understand the brand's vision, core values, and other topics that we thought potential retail partners would want to know.

What motivated you to start your company and create the products that we see today? Our founders were tinkering in the kitchen trying to crack the code on taste and better-for-you foods, after realizing many protein snacks were not healthy or tasty. Twenty years ago, just as we do today, we recognized that being unique and different is a winning formula. We pioneered real dark chocolate coated protein bars for many lifestyles. We make protein snacks that are honest, tastier, and healthier for the whole family by satisfying specific dietary lifestyles, including vegan, gluten-free, low-sugar, no-added-sugar, and non-GMO.
What are your company’s core values? At NuGo Nutrition, we value a better tasting product that is better for you and the world.
If you could tell a retailer three things about what makes your brand different, what would they be? a. NuGo uses real dark chocolate as the coating on gluten-free NuGo Dark and NuGo Slim. Other prominent bar companies are deceiving the public, using fake chocolate that replaces the natural cocoa butter with palm kernel oil and still labeling it dark chocolate. Additionally, NuGo Slim is a better option for weight management, for diabetics to maintain steady blood sugar, low carb diets, and overall healthy snacking with a certified and tested incredibly low glycemic index. NuGo Slim does not contain malitol or artificial sweeteners that are known to be harmful to this category of consumers.
What are some of the challenges that you've overcome to bring your business to its current state? Real dark chocolate is more costly than fake chocolate-flavored, unhealthy palm kernel oil that does not require more expensive temperature control shipping. Canada is a cooler-weather country so why are other bar companies using palm kernel oil and deceptively labeling dark chocolate? Simply put, it is to save money. They value their bottom line over your health and our planet. Palm oil is much cheaper than cocoa butter and doesn’t require more expensive temperature control shipping.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work? We take NuGo bars and cookies with us everywhere and share them with family and friends. They are the ideal snack for running, traveling, or anywhere.
